Johnny Barr’s Rebrand

This project was the starting point of a relationship that has continued for several years. Johnny Barr’s initially had me make some small fixes and tweaks to their original website, which developed to creating an entirely fresh new website and revitalising their brand which had started to show signs of age.

The owner was very particular that he had always been inspired by the classic 1950’s idea of an upmarket American diner, before the age of fast food and franchised restaurants. It was this classic atmosphere he wanted to embrace with a modern and innovative twist, serving freshly prepared dishes every day, drawing their inspiration from popular American dishes.

We decided we would adopt art direction centred around those 1950’s diners, and choose typography that had a distinctive Americana vibe to further communicate that idea. We wanted to be true to the original brand that started it all so maintained the chef icon as part of the new identity’s core, but steered heavily away from the dated comic and grunge treatments their older logos used.
